The Daniel Fast: Do's and Don'ts

The Daniel Fast is a diet based on the Old Testament Prophet (see Daniel 10:3). Unlike other fasts, you can eat whenever you want but you cannot eat whatever you want. During the 21 days (three weeks), you are restricted to eating only fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, completely abstaining from animal, meat and dairy products, as well as leavened bread and refined or processed foods. For many reasons, the Daniel Fast is popular among the Christian community for its spiritual and health benefits. The Bible says those who followed this diet plan looked healthier and better nourished (see Daniel 1:15).

What matters most during this fast is your intimacy with the Lord. Rather than focusing on what you can or cannot eat, prayer and meditating on the word of God should be top priority. In doing so, you will find it easier to commit to the diet while cultivating a stronger relationship with God. Here is a list of foods you can include and foods to avoid during the Daniel Fast.

Foods to include in your diet during the Daniel Fast:

  • All Fruits & Vegetables: fresh, frozen, dried, juiced or canned

  • Whole Grains: brown rice, whole wheat, popcorn, oats, whole wheat pasta, whole wheat tortillas, quinoa, etc.

  • Legumes: canned or dried beans, lentils

  • Nuts & Seeds: raw, sprouted, dry-roasted

  • Quality Oils: avocado, coconut, canola, olive, sesame

  • Beverages: water, fresh-pressed juice

  • Seasonings: herbs, spices, salt, vinegar

  • Other: tofu, soy products

Foods to avoid in your diet during the Daniel Fast:

  • All Animal Products: dairy, eggs, fish, meat, poultry

  • Sweeteners: natural and artificial

  • Leavened Breads: anything with baking powder, baking soda or yeast

  • Refined Grains: white flour, white rice

  • Processed Foods: those containing artificial flavors, food additives, chemicals, or preservatives

  • Deep-Fried Foods: potato chips, corn chips, french fries

  • Beverages: alcohol, coffee, tea, soda, energy drinks

  • Other: butter, margarine, gum, mints, foods high in fat

Tips:

  • Stay hydrated.

  • Always read the labels, especially when purchasing packaged, canned, or bottled foods.

  • At first, your body will go through many adjustments as you consume solely plant-based foods. Ensure you continue taking your vitamins and/or supplements to help support your overall health.

  • There will be times when you’ll want to go back to your normal eating habits. During these times, pray and ask God to give you the strength to commit to the dietary restrictions. He understands!
